Critique and Affirmation in Erich Fromm explores the relations between Erich Fromm's theory and practice in politics and the psychoanalytic clinic - their points of continuity and contradiction. Drawing on a systematic reading of Fromm's published output, as well as extensive research in the Fromm archives, Matheus Romanetto extracts the fragments of ontology, logic, and ethics implicit in his writings, leading to a re-evaluation of Fromm's place in 20th century intellectual history. Interpolated with the theoretical argument are three historical (...) excursi thematizing Fromm's practice in political life, religious life, and the psychoanalytic clinic, setting the grounds for a new political sociology of radical humanism and critical theory. For centuries pilgrimages are present in Christianity. For Catholics, the importance of devotions and visits to the Marian sanctuaries is indisputable. The number of visitors and pilgrims to these temples make the local economy an important destination of religious tourism. In order to understand the economic determinants of religious tourism, two sanctuaries were studied, namely, Aparecida and Fatima. Given the large collection of statistical information of the Portuguese Sanctuary, it was verified through the Vector Autoregressive model that Gross Domestic Product (...) and Unemployment have a causal unidirectional relation with the pilgrimages. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag model revealed that an increase in Gross Domestic Product and international arrivals in the short term positively impacts the number of pilgrims. Through the Ordinary Least Squares regression, significant statistical relationships between climatic factors and visitors in the Sanctuary of Fatima were found. The Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average forecast method was applied to the number of monthly visitors to the Sanctuary of Aparecida and to the number of pilgrims in the Sanctuary of Fatima, the results show a strong seasonality and that the first and last months of the year are periods of low demand. The results of this study allow a new look at religious tourism in the Marian context, the empirical results allow those responsible for establishing public policies, tourism agents and the administration of the Sanctuaries to direct their actions. Measures planned and executed jointly between the various agents can benefit residents, visitors, pilgrims, the tourism sector, the local economy and the Sanctuaries themselves. (shrink)

The Brazilian imaginary, impregnated by an ambiguous relationship between the forces of "good" and "evil", caused some Pentecostal churches that spread here to seek this ambiguity in order to attract believers. Emphasizing the spiritual dispute in the form of a "war" in his speeches, Pentecostalism was able to organize the Brazilian religious imaginary, finding in some portions of society the resonance of its message. This systematization of the religious imaginary, which finds in the "Spiritual War" the way of manifesting itself (...) in the Pentecostal milieu, also brings with it important elements of the cultural-religious milieu. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the repercussion of the adaptation of the Brazilian religious imaginary within what is called the "war against the demons" in the Universal Church Of the Kingdom of God. Pentecostal discourse has adapted to a reality where inequality and social ills are transformed by the "Spiritual Battle" into primary causes of the suffering that affects individuals and prevents them from prospering. Resumo Este artigo defende o ponto de vista de que as bases da ciência cognitiva contemporânea estão em sintonia com o pensamento de Merleau-Ponty, em seus aspectos antiobjetivista e antirrepresentacionalista. A ideia de representação mental é contestada, tanto na CC quanto no pensamento de Merleau-Ponty. A cognição não espelha um mundo exterior independente dos sujeitos incorporados. O mundo é um existencial, como afirmam Merleau-Ponty e a CC. A hipótese da representação mental supõe que o mundo pode ser percebido de forma (...) independente do sujeito que percebe. Isso não é verdade. A percepção depende da forma como o sujeito age em seu mundo percebido. Todas as estimulações que o organismo encontra só são possíveis pelos seus movimentos precedentes que resultam na exposição do órgão receptor às influências externas. Os estímulos sensoriais que o organismo encontra dependem diretamente do seu comportamento motor e a forma como o organismo se move depende diretamente das consequências sensoriais dos seus comportamentos anteriores.This article defends the view that the foundations of contemporary cognitive science are in tune with Merleau-Ponty’s thinking in its anti-objectivist and anti-representationalist aspects. The idea of mental representation is contested both in CC and in Merleau-Ponty’s thinking. Cognition does not mirror an outside world independent of embodied subjects. The world is an existential one as Merleau-Ponty and the CC say. The mental representation hypothesis assumes that the world can be perceived independently of the perceiving subject. This is not true. Perception depends on how the subject acts in his perceived world. All the stimulations that the organism finds are only possible by its previous movements that result in the exposure of the receiving organ to external influences. The sensory stimuli that the organism finds depend directly on its motor behavior and the way the organism moves depends directly on the sensory consequences of its previous behaviors. (shrink)

Nosso objetivo neste artigo é discutir o problema da demanda excessiva(overdemandingness) colocada pelos modelos de responsabilidade de assistência na discussão sobre pobreza mundial. Tomaremos a abordagem de Singer como paradigmática e argumentaremos que seu grau de exigência gera um impasse teórico na discussão. Este impasse, acreditamos, só pode ser resolvido recorrendo a outros modelos de responsabilidade, e.g., o modelo causal. Isso implica rejeitar uma das principais pressuposições metodológicas de Singer, a saber, a separação entre aspectos factuais e normativos da discussão. (...) Nossa estratégia, porém, ainda pressupõe o pano de fundo do modelo de assistência, que deve apenas ser especificado por outros modelos. Com isso pretendemos mostrar que a acusação frequente de implausibilidadelevantada contra a abordagem de Singer não é principalmente uma questão do conteúdo do dever imposto. Mas sim da força moral das razões oferecidas pelos modelos de assistência para fundamentar deveres. (shrink)

A teoria da justiça proposta por John Rawls investiga a estrutura básica da sociedade, tendo como base a justiça política, a justiça pública e a justiça distributiva. Rawls propõe uma teoria que representa uma alternativa ao utilitarismo, pois para o autor os direitos não deverão estar sujeitos à negociações políticas ou sujeitos ao cálculo de interesses sociais. A tese principal deste artigo é que emoções são parcialmente constituídas por estados corporais. No centro da discussão está a tradição James-Lange e serão estabelecidas duas premissas para identificar as abordagens mais relevantes acerca desse ponto: a Premissa de James, que será investigada a partir do trabalho do próprio autor; e a Premissa de Lange, que será investigada a partir do trabalho de Prinz. Embora se inscreva na mesma tradição, a perspectiva apresentada neste artigo diverge de ambas posições ao defender (...) uma visão sistêmica, na qual as emoções são constituídas tanto por estados periféricos corporificados quanto por estados cerebrais. A visão sistêmica parece vulnerável a duas críticas principais: de que as emoções, ao contrário de estados corporais, possuem intencionalidade; e as neurociências mapearam as bases neurais das emoções, então não há motivo para colocar fora do cérebro os componentes que as constituem. Em relação à primeira crítica, argumenta-se que as emoções não possuem intencionalidade direta, uma vez que não influenciam os comportamentos de modo específico, como objetos ou conteúdos representacionais o fazem. No tocante à segunda crítica, as conclusões das neurociências dizem menos do que aparentam acerca dos constituintes das emoções. A confusão na literatura empírica resulta da falha em distinguir corretamente emoções de desejos. Isso será realizado mediante a análise do debate entre as teorias de James-Lange para, posteriormente, mostrar como a Premissa de Lange desconstrói teorias relevantes desta posição, inclusive a sua própria. This article characterizes the pedagogical workshop as a means of building up knowledge based on action and reflection and briefly reports on an experience with a workshop offered to teachers of the Local Reaching Net. Este trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar a representação da mulher e da família no discurso de Dom Antônio Mazzarotto, primeiro bispo de Ponta Grossa-PR (1930-1965). Dom Antônio Mazzarotto representou o esforço normatizador da instituição católica na diocese que tomou posse em três de Maio de 1930. Nesta desenvolveu em trinta e cinco anos um intenso trabalho pastoral. Uma das estratégias de seu bispado foi à publicação de cartas pastorais para se comunicar com o clero e os fiéis. Durante sua (...) atuação na Diocese de Ponta Grossa o bispo escreveu trinta e seis cartas pastorais, uma a cada ano. Nestas cartas Dom Antônio se posicionou de forma conservadora acerca do casamento e do papel da mulher na família, algo que não fugia à norma da Igreja Católica de então. A normatização feminina perpassa pelos escritos de Dom Antônio, mais especificamente na Carta Pastoral “O Matrimônio Christão- 1934”, documento que aponta a Virgem Maria como modelo ideal de mulher esposa e mãe. Palavras Chave: Casamento, Catolicismo, Mulher.This study aims to analyze the representation of women and family in the speech of Dom Antônio Mazzarotto, first bishop of Ponta Grossa, Paraná (1930-1965). Dom Antônio Mazzarotto represented the effort of normalizing Catholic institution in the diocese in which took office on May 3, 1930. At that institution he developed an intense pastoral work in thirty-five years. One of the strategies of his bishopric was the publication of pastoral letters to communicate with the clergy and the faithful. During his tenure at Ponta Grossa Diocese the bishop wrote thirty-six pastoral letters, one every year. In these letters Dom Antônio stood conservatively about marriage and the role of women in the family, something that did not escape the rule of the Catholic Church then. The normative feminine permeates the writings of Dom Antônio, more specifically in Pastoral Letter “O Matrimônio Christão-1934”, document that shows the Virgin Mary as a model of ideal woman wife and mother. É uma prática comum na metafísica contemporânea qualificar a discussão entre o tridimensionalismo e o quadridimensionalismo como uma questão acerca da existência de partes temporais. Enquanto que o tridimensionalismo não permite que as partes temporais existam, de tal forma que os objetos seriam totalmente presentes em todos os tempos nos quais eles existem, o quadridimensionalismo requer que esses objetos tenham partes temporais. Essa maneira de caracterizar o debate parte do ponto de vista da metaontologia quineana, segundo a qual as questões (...) metafísicas tratam apenas da existência de certos entes, sem considerar uma relação de fundamentalidade entre eles. No presente trabalho, demonstrarei como essa caracterização do debate falha em mostrar que há pontos em comum entre aquelas duas teorias e, por conta disso, como a metaontologia neoaristotélica é a mais adequada para entender a mereologia temporal. Smith's contribution to the discussion on market economics and its relationship with moral and politics is discussed in this article. It is argued that the author's economic approach is incorporated into the concept of natural liberty and that free trade represents his response to the feudal system to prevent corruption and inequality. The text focuses on reconstructing the Scottish philosopher's economic defense of market economics, including his criticisms of regulatory wage policies, guild systems, and grain provision. It is argued that (...) these policies violate individual justice and freedom norms and hinder economic growth. Individual freedom is defended by Smith as a natural right and a form of emancipation from domination relations in the economic sphere. In summary, the article offers a general perspective on how the author employs the concepts of freedom and economic well-being to defend liberal reform against feudal mercantile practices. (shrink)

In this work, we will try to outline the position of desire and representation in the constitution of the capture apparatus of the imperial machine. For this, we will try to represent the way in which the libido itself is represented both in the primitive socius and in the barbarian socius. To carry out this path, we will start from two base texts: the first will be The Anti-Oedipus, where we trace the genesis of production, registration and consumption; together with (...) the text by Thousand Plateaus entitled The Capturing Apparatus, where we highlight the movement of the State's genesis and how, its conception is indifferent to the notion of the modern subject, as it is based on the flows of desire and on its ideal and concrete representations. In addition to this outline, we will seek to establish the influences of Marx and Engels on the conceptions of Deleuze and Guattari, in spite of the process of reflection about the genesis of the State. For this, we take the bibliographies of Marx and Engels indicated by the French authors – referenced in the two texts cited above – in their description of the genesis of the capture apparatus that is the State. In this paper, I assess whether indexical attitudes, e.g. beliefs and desires, have any special properties or present any special challenge to theories of propositional attitudes. I being by investigating the claim that allegedly problematic indexical cases are just instances of the familiar phenomenon of referential opacity. Regardless of endorsing that claim, I provide an argument to the effect that indexical attitudes do have a special property. My argument relies on the fact that one cannot account for what is it (...) to share someone else’s indexical attitudes without rejecting some plausible thesis about propositional attitudes. In the end, I assess Herman Cappelen and Josh Dever’s considerations on intentional action and extract an argument from them that could – if successful – neutralize my own. I finish by arguing that their argument has an important flaw, thus failing to convince us that indexical attitudes are just as ordinary as any other. (shrink)

Ensinar é motivar. Essa breve sentença condensa a ideia central do presente ensaio, a saber, que o ofício do professor se concentra sobremaneira na produção de ações nos estudantes. Uma aula bem-sucedida depende disso. De alguma forma, precisamos ser capazes de estimular a interação verbal entre os colegas, a realização de exercícios, reflexões, e assim por diante. A questão que se coloca, então, é: como fazer isso? Quais são as ferramentas e conhecimentos que devemos deter para que a nossa tarefa (...) motivacional seja cumprida? Neste ensaio, defendendo uma perspectiva segundo a qual o professor é um ser eminentemente performático, mostraremos que a teoria da motivação humeana opera enquanto uma resposta contundente ao problema colocado. Por fim, a nossa investigação se encerra com a elaboração de um plano de aula que leva em consideração as reflexões de David Hume sobre agência e motivação, mobilizando, também, o conhecimento oriundo dos estudos narratológicos, como o Paradigma de Syd Field, enquanto ferramentas auxiliares. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo contribuir en la discusión sobre el incremento del complejo y multifacético fenómeno de recampesinización que acontece en la actual etapa de desarrollo capitalista, analizando uno de sus aspectos menos conocidos que está relacionado al movimiento denominado como “contraculturas espaciales”. Las contraculturas espaciales son experimentos de organización socio-espacial de carácter “alternativo” que se popularizaron principalmente en la década de 1960. A partir de los años 1990, acompañando un nuevo periodo de crisis del capitalismo, se evidencia (...) la renovación y el fortalecimiento de dicho movimiento, con el surgimiento de nuevas experiencias de este tipo, muchas de las cuales están inspiradas por la permacultura, concepto que se refiere al diseño de asentamientos humanos sustentables. Basándose en dos casos, uno en Argentina y otra en Cuba, se discutirá de qué maneras la permacultura puede estar promoviendo, en la actualidad, el surgimiento de “nuevos campesinos”. (shrink)

Arthur Schopenhauer is predominantly considered a kind of arch-pessimist and founder of the movement classified as "modern philosophical pessimism," due to his innovative claim to maintain, in a systematic way and on “objective reasons”, that non-being is better than being. However, two other groups of scholars follow different directions. One of them does not deny Schopenhauer's pessimism but attributes it especially to subjective reasons, such as his melancholic behavior. The other group does not even consider Schopenhauer as a pessimist, but, (...) on the contrary, as an optimist, an indication that we lack clear and explicit criteria for understanding what Schopenhauerian pessimism would be. I argue that there is, indeed, a pessimistic "logic" objectively articulated within Schopenhauer's philosophy, and that therefore we must examine Schopenhauerian pessimism according to the philosophical reasons that make up his argumentative plan. To support this hypothesis, my first objective is to outline such a plan, following an informal model of the argumentative analysis. This approach also guides a more reflective critical assessment of his pessimistic "logic". Thus, the second objective is to introduce some parameters for further evaluation of the argumentative reach of Schopenhauerian pessimism. (shrink)

Os videogames ganharam destaque desde os anos 1970 e com a popularização da internet, originaram-se diversos relatos de que jovens vêm exagerando nos jogos fazendo com que em muitas vezes o uso deixe de ser recreativo. Esta pesquisa objetiva investigar, por meio da literatura, quando o uso de jogos eletrônicos é caracterizado como uma atividade recreativa e quando começa a ser considerado uma dependência. Foi realizada uma revisão na literatura na qual foram selecionados artigos científicos relacionados ao tema. Os resultados (...) apontam que os jogos eletrônicos são a atividade de lazer mais praticada pelos adolescentes e por proporcionar um ambiente seguro e controlado permitem uma fuga da realidade para evitação dos problemas sociais. Concluindo, o uso abusivo dos jogos eletrônicos está associado a diversas comorbidades, interferindo de forma significativa na vida social, familiar, acadêmica e afetiva do sujeito, sendo que os adolescentes são os mais vulneráveis a desenvolver uma dependência. O objetivo proposto pelo presente trabalho é o de expor a crítica elaborada por Schopenhauer à moral kantiana, em especial, na medida em que ela se volta para os conceitos de vontade-livre e imperativo categórico. Com efeito, Schopenhauer (1788-1860) reconhece os méritos de Kant (1724-1804) não só no âmbito da epistemologia, como também na ética, por tê-la desvinculado de todo eudaimonismo. Porém, ele ainda assim direciona-lhe algumas críticas com enfoque em questões como o formalismo da ética kantiana e o seu (...) caráter dietético, i. e., prescritivo, que aqueles conceitos lhe adicionam. Neste artigo me aproximo dos problemas que emergem como consequência do cruzamento entre cidade, corpo e desejo. A partir de El Mendigo Chupapijas, autoficção publicada pelo argentino Pablo Pérez em 2005, apresento algumas questões sobre o espaço urbano e suas possibilidades de uso e profanação. O imaginário evocado pelo autor, cuja história descreve a Buenos Aires dos anos de 1990, apresenta-nos uma cidade cuja arquitetura é atravessada por prazeres subterrâneos que, como discutimos, são capazes de nos sugerir outros modos de (...) habitá-la. O ponto central deste artigo é explicar como as emoções desempenham um papel fundamental no comportamento moral dos mamíferos sociais. Entendida como um fenômeno natural, a moralidade é caracterizada como um sistema de exigências recíprocas, em que os lobos estão envolvidos desde o nascimento, e o vínculo emocional entre os membros da matilha desempenha um papel fundamental. O argumento é empiricamente informado para apresentar uma possível relação entre emoções e instintos sociais com relação à aptidão dos lobos para comportamentos sociais (...) moralmente qualificados, com base na existência de um sistema social complexo dentro da alcateia. O artigo relaciona pesquisas cognitivas sobre emoções e sistemas psicobiológicos a estudos contemporâneos em etologia de lobos para apoiar, empiricamente, a tese filosófica de que emoções surgem em resposta a uma série de eventos socialmente significativos. Assim, o objetivo é elucidar a natureza das demandas emocionais inerentes à moralidade, bem como sua relação com as características naturais que permitiram aos lobos desenvolver uma vida social complexa. Nesse sentido, o artigo pretende apresentar os elementos necessários para o surgimento de um fenômeno moral inerente aos mamíferos com vida social complexa, o que parece ser um forte argumento a favor de uma teoria que explique a moralidade em bases evolutivas. I discuss a criterion for successful communication between a speaker and a hearer put forward by Buchanan according to which there is communicative success only if the hearer entertains, as a result of interpreting the speaker's utterance, a thought that has the same truth conditions as the thought asserted by the speaker and, furthermore, does so in virtue of recognizing the speaker's communicative intentions. I argue, against Buchanan, that the data on which it is based are compatible with a view (...) involving Fregean modes of presentation. In the second part of the article I critically discuss Unnsteinsson's claim that communicative success depends on the absence of contextually salient false distinctness beliefs about the subject matter of the conversation. I argue that this thesis leads to clearly counterintuitive consequences and that no fundamental role must be given to the presence or absence of false distinctness beliefs in one's account of successful communication. The upshot is that we should stick with Buchanan's criterion. I conclude by employing Strawson and Recanati's concepts of linking and merging to show how the criterion I favour is compatible with the fact that, when subjects hold no relevant false distinctness beliefs, communicative success does not seem to be disrupted by the hearer seemingly failing to recognize the speaker's intentions. Neste artigo, defenderei que o recurso à imagem de Giges que é feita por Glauco no livro II da República de Platão serve ao propósito de demonstrar que, dada a ambição (πλεονεξία) que é própria à natureza humana, a concessão de um poder ilimitado a quem quer que seja conduz fatalmente à tirania. Antes disso, contudo, reconstruirei a hipótese de Glauco para a origem da justiça e por fim sustentarei como Glauco, ao final do seu discurso, procura superar o plano (...) alegórico do relato que ele faz de Giges, sem, por outro lado, renunciar aos princípios que ali são postulados. Com isso, pretendo também mostrar que o discurso de Glauco constitui uma unidade minimamente consistente. Palavras-chave: Glauco; Giges; Técnica; Tirania. Glaucon’s speech and the birth of the tyrant in Republic II Abstract: In this article, I argue that Glaucon's use of the image of Gyges in Book II of Plato's Republic is intended to demonstrate that, given the human tendency towards ambition (πλεονεξία), the granting of unlimited power to anyone inevitably leads to tyranny. Before that, I first explain Glaucon’s hypothesis for the origin of justice. Then, I maintain how Glaucon attempts to go beyond the allegorical level of the Gyges story in his speech's conclusion, while still holding onto the principles presented therein. Through this, I aim to demonstrate that Glaucon's speech is a consistent unit. Key-words: Glaucon; Gyges; Skill; Tyranny. Le discour de Glaucon et la naissance du tyrant dans le livre II de la République Résumé: Dans cet article, je soutiendrai que l'utilisation de l'image de Gygès par Glaucon dans le Livre II de La République de Platon vise à démontrer que, compte tenu de la tendance humaine à l'ambition (πλεονεξία), l'octroi d'un pouvoir illimité à quiconque conduit inévitablement à la tyrannie. Avant cela, j'expliquerai d'abord l'hypothèse de Glaucon sur l'origine de la justice. Ensuite, je maintiendrai comment Glaucon cherche à dépasser le niveau allégorique de l'histoire de Gygès dans la conclusion de son discours, tout en conservant les principes présentés dans celui-ci. I suggest a solution to a conflict between semantic internalism – according to which the concepts one expresses are determined by one's use of representations – and publicity – according to which, if two subjects successfully communicate or are in genuine agreement, then they entertain thoughts constituted by the same concepts. My solution rests on the thesis that there can be successful communication and genuine agreement between thinkers employing distinct concepts as long as there is a certain relation (of conceptually (...) guaranteed sameness of extension) between them. In section 2, I motivate semantic internalism and show how it conflicts with publicity. In section 3, I carve the logical space of possible solutions to the conflict into liberal and conservative solutions. Section 4 assesses Wikforss's conservative solution to Burge's arthritis thought‐experiment and concludes that it fails for more than one reason. Section 5 introduces a new case study involving a deferential concept. This case serves as the backdrop for my positive account offered in section 6. The conclusion of the article is preceded by a comparison of my view with another recently proposed by Recanati (section 7) and some replies to possible objections (section 8). (shrink)

It seems plausible that successfully communicating with our peers requires entertaining the same thoughts as they do. We argue that this view is incompatible with other, independently plausible principles of thought individuation. Our argument is based on a puzzle inspired by the Kripkean story of Peter and Paderewski: having developed several variations of the original story, we conclude that understanding and communication cannot be modeled as a process of thought transfer between speaker and hearer. While we are not the first (...) to reach this conclusion, the significance of our argument lies in the fact that it only relies on widely accepted premises, without depending on any especially controversial theory of mental and linguistic content. We conclude by drawing out the implications of that conclusion: if communication and understanding do not require thought identity, then one important motivation for the postulation of inter-personally shared thoughts is undercut. In this article, we aim to describe the crucial role of the somatic marker hypothesis (SMH) in the interaction between what we term the ‘emotional imperative’ and the interference of reason during the decision-making process in António Damásio’s work Descartes’ Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain. Firstly, we examine the interaction between reasoning, emotions, and human action, with emphasis on the cognitive processes underlying decisionmaking. Next, we explore the influence of emotional and biological factors on SMH, going beyond cost-benefit (...) analysis, highlighting the relevance of memory and mental representations in the decision-making process. Subsequently, we address the influence of SMH, emotions, and feelings on decisions, especially in scenarios of risk and immediate reward, emphasizing the need to consider immediate and future implications. Following this, we investigate somatic markers in neural terms, discussing whether they are innate or acquired and their influence on social behavior and brain lesions. Finally, we analyze the relationship between brain processes, such as the prefrontal cortices, and the interpretation of bodily sensations, emotional responses, and decisionmaking, accentuating the importance of these regions in assimilating somatic markers and their influence on thoughts, perceptions, and behaviors. We conclude that SMH is seen as a biological mechanism that integrates emotional and cognitive information, shaping evaluations and choices. -/- . (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to delve into the epistemological challenge surrounding the qualitative and quantitative aspects of belief and credence through a decision-theoretic framework: belief emerges as a cognitive process balancing the urge for information and the fear of error. The first part is primarily historical, and delves into the philosophy of science and its concern about the acceptance of probabilistic hypothesis. In the second part, the focus shifts from the philosophy of science to contemporary epistemology, specifically the (...) rationality of belief and credence. The main outcome of this paper lies in highlighting how the decision-theoretic approach illuminates the nature of belief rationality, exploring the connection between belief and credence, the context-dependent nature of belief, and the significance of deductive closure as rational requirements. We discuss the way the early quarantine period during the coronavirus crisis illuminated some aspects of previous daily life in downtown São Paulo. Changes in our surroundings and withdrawal into confinement elicited a new relationship to the senses and to imagination. With that, it became apparent the degree to which the free use of these faculties is repressed by violence and inequality, as they are usually manifest in the city center. We explore the idea that some of the changes in (...) social interaction, as they became widespread during the pandemic, were already prefigured in the relationship between social classes in this part of town. We then discuss the dependency this has on the spacialization of social inequalities in the urban fabric. (shrink)

In the text Critique of the Foundations of Psychology (1928) Georges Politzer (1903-1942) sought to investigate the epistemological bases of some currents of psychology. His intention was to reorient psychological studies toward a concreteconception. By analyzing Gestalt theory, Behaviorism, and Psychoanalysis, Politzer outlined a project of concrete psychology with some principles that guide possible perspectives of studies on psychological phenomena. His principles consist instudying psychological facts through the prism of the first person and consider man in his drama. Despite being (...) Hungarian, the author walked his political and intellectual path in France in the 20th century, a time when Jean Paul Sartre (1905-1980) focusedon psychological phenomena under the prism of phenomenology, proposing an Existential Psychoanalysis at the end of Being and Nothingness (1943). In this sense, we will verify to what extent the Sartrian theory can contemplate Politzer’s principlesof a concrete psychology. (shrink)

This article explores the interrelation between the Dionysian artistic impulse, human nature, and Greek culture in the early works of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). With a focus on the significance of the human-nature connection, it highlights the anthropological conception of ancient tragic thought and the recognition of the role of instincts in the production of tragic art. The Dionysian artistic impulse, linked by Nietzsche to the vital drive of creation and destruction, presents, in its celebration of the reconciliation between humans and (...) nature, existential aspects fundamental to humanity that have been neglected by Western tradition. In its artistic dimension, the Dionysian is also expressed as an instinct, fostering a bodily and spiritual connection through which the tragic artist becomes a work of art. In its vital dimension, the Dionysian promotes the dissolution of individual subjectivity, returning one to their primordial nature and reconnection with animality. The denial of these artistic elements by the Socratic spirit led to the forgetting of human nature itself, resulting in the distortion of artistic creation and consequently, the decline of tragedy. In this context, Socrates' proposition of renouncing instinctual nature in favor of intellectual life is contrasted by Nietzsche, who, through the tragic perspective, argues that humans do not transcend their animal nature but remain subject to it, connected to animality. Thus, Nietzsche positions himself in the anthropological debate in opposition to the philosophical tradition initiated by Socrates. (shrink)

ABSTRACT:The section “Lordship and Bondage” in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit offers us, through the criticism of slavery, some indications regarding Hegel’s conception of human nature. In this paper some consequences of this conception for Hegel’s political philosophy are identified and presented. The analysis shows problems may emerge when we analyze some fundamental Hegelian concepts – “recognition” and shows that some “men” – if we take into consideration the way these concepts were defined in the master-slave dialectic. In light of these (...) problems it is pointed out that Hegel’s political philosophy, and also his position regarding slavery, become less cogent and more susceptible to criticism. The last part of the text analyzes some consequences of problems related to the possibility of defining the concepts “recognition” and “men” in terms of Hegel’s model of state. RESUMO:A seção “Dominação e escravidão” da Fenomenologia do espírito de Hegel nos oferece, por meio da crítica da escravidão, algumas indicações com respeito à concepção hegeliana da natureza humana. Neste artigo, serão identificadas e apresentadas algumas consequências dessa concepção para a filosofia política de Hegel. A análise aponta que alguns problemas podem emergir, quando analisamos alguns dos conceitos fundamentais de Hegel, “reconhecimento” e “homem”, se levamos em consideração o modo como estes conceitos foram definidos na dialética do senhor e do escravo. Como resultado desses problemas, é apontado que sua filosofia política, e igualmente sua posição com respeito à escravidão, se tornam menos cogentes e mais suscetíveis a críticas. A última parte do texto analisa algumas consequências dos problemas relacionados às possibilidades de definir os conceitos “reconhecimento” e “homem” para o modelo hegeliano de Estado. (shrink)

Este artigo tem como tema central o problema do fundamento das distinções morais, conforme proposto por David Hume na obra Investigações sobre os princípios da moral e, mais especificamente, o problema da motivação moral, tomando como foco o papel que as emoções e a empatia têm no comportamento em sociedade de animais de vida social complexa. No que tange a essa questão, a importância dada aos afetos pela tese humeana será relacionada com a teoria evolucionista. A fim de ilustrar esse (...) ponto, vamos utilizar o comportamento social de lobos como estudo de caso. O texto consiste, portanto, em uma apresentação comparativa, a partir de uma perspectiva humeana e evolucionista, de como o aparato afetivo natural de mamíferos sociais, neste caso homens e lobos, opera de modo a inclinar os membros dessas espécies a aprovar ou censurar comportamentos socialmente relevantes. According to a recently developed family of relational views, whether two concepts C1 and C2 are the same is a matter of an external relation in which their tokens stand. In this paper, we highlight the chief contributions of Relationism in the elucidation of concept sameness, present a set of arguments to the effect that relational accounts of concept sameness fail to accommodate a substantive notion of concept publicity, and offer a diagnosis of this result. Nosso objetivo é tomar o pensamento de Schopenhauer como estudo de caso e ponto de partida para discutir em que medida o “pessimismo” pode ser fundamentado e reinterpretado segundo “razões objetivas”, conceitualmente filosóficas. Para intérpretes como Christopher Janaway e Frederick Beiser, a legitimidade filosófica do pessimismo schopenhaueriano, atribuído à tese de que a vida é um negócio que não cobre os custos do investimento, é garantida pelas implicações inferidas da metafísica da Vontade. Por outro lado, Kuno Fischer, acompanhado dentre outros (...) por Bryan Magee, reinterpreta tal pessimismo a partir de “razões subjetivas”, pautadas em certas disposições de espírito ou preferências, como a relação conflituosa de Schopenhauer com sua mãe, por exemplo. A dificuldade em determinar mais precisamente a fundamentação do pessimismo de Schopenhauer redobra se considerarmos estudos que seguem uma tendência oposta e classificam esse autor como um “otimista”; Heinz Gerd Ingenkamp pode ser apontado como representante dessa vertente interpretativa. Se tal dificuldade se deve, como supomos a princípio, ao inevitável anacronismo que permeia a maior parte das discussões sobre o suposto pessimismo de Schopenhauer acerca do valor da existência, propomos minimizá-lo mediante um procedimento exegético que indicamos aqui ainda em linhas gerais. O texto a seguir tem como base teórica a tendência alemã da Didática da História, principalmente as propostas de Rüsen. O esforço feito foi para relacionar conceitos desse campo de estudo com dados levantados de forma empírica através de questionários respondido por jovens de Ensino Médio da região dos Campos Gerais/PR. As reflexões feitas se debruçaram sobre o conhecimento histórico apresentado pelos estudantes frente as questões sobre o período em que os militares estiveram a frente do governo no Brasil. Os (...) conceitos utilizados para pensar essas respostas foram, de forma mais central, Aprendizado e Formação histórica, além de Pensamento Utópico, e de forma mais ampla Cultura Histórica. Em linhas gerais é possível apontar que os sujeitos que optam por saídas autoritárias sãos os mesmos que demonstraram menor conhecimento sobre o regime que professam como modelo para solucionar os problemas do Brasil.
